The need for a cathedral in Seattle arose in 1903, when Edward O'Dea, bishop of what was then known as the Diocese of Nesqually (later spelled "Nisqually"), elected to move the Episcopal see from Vancouver, Washington to Seattle. Construction began in 1905 and was completed in 1907. In 1916, the cathedral underwent major renovations as a result of the collapse of its dome; other major renovations were completed in 1950 and 1994. The cathedral, rectory, and site were designated city landmarks in 1984.

St James is the archdiocesan cathedral for Seattle. It's an unusually beautiful building. The choir and organist are award winners so the music is always excellent. The pastor, Father Ryan, is a wonderful guy who clearly cares about people and who preaches some great homilies. The congregation are a happy, diverse, outgoing bunch so it's easy to meet people and make friends here. If you're looking for God you can find Him here!
This place is beautiful, if you're in the area and need a few minutes of peace and quite St. James Cathedral is must. I attended a funeral in June and have been here several times over the years. I forget how beautiful it is, everything about it is breathtaking. I gave it 5 stars, like I would a museum. Some go to people watch, others go for the art/design and last some go as a quite getaway for the soul. Rain or shine there's handful of reasons, each one correct to the person stepping inside the Cathedral doors.
