Amble along an elevated walkway amidst an old-growth cypress swamp at Highlands Hammock State Park, one of Florida's oldest parks. Follow the Ancient Hammock trail to see an oak tree that is over 1,000 years old (possibly the oldest tree in the state). At the Florida Civilian Conservation Corps Museum you'll see interactive exhibits on the park’s construction. You can ride a bike along the trails or hike near dusk to see some deer. Along the swamp trail, watch for toads and turtles near the dark black water. You can also take advantage of the campground, basketball court, playground, and fire pits. Be sure to bring bug spray. • The park is small relatively speaking. They have a good number of trails. We saw some deer and other wildlife. It was an enjoyable stroll through the FL woods.

  • Awesome park with plenty to do! When you enter the park ranger will give you a map with various hiking trails you can choose from. These trails range in distance and the map will guide you to the right trail for you. The gift shop is a little pricey on snacks and drinks so be sure to bring your own!
  • This was our first visit and we checked out three or four of the trails. We saw one baby alligator and one orange snake (rat snake?). Other than that all we saw was common Floridian flora and very little fauna. :o( I have heard that the park is an awesome place so I will have to give it a second chance. Not much to show but a few pics.
