Science Museum · Hidden Gem · Museum
The Sitka Sound Science Center, a 501c3 nonprofit corporation, is based in Sitka, Alaska – the only full-service community on the outer coast of Southeast Alaska. The Sitka Sound Science Center is uniquely qualified to provide unparalleled access for research and education programs in the Gulf of Alaska, Eastern Pacific Ocean, and North American Coastal Temperate Rainforests.

The Science Center builds upon Sitka’s legacy as a research and educational community. Sitka has a maritime tradition and commercial, charter, sport, and subsistence fishing all still play vital roles in the economy and culture of our community. Sitka also has ample opportunities for outreach and education. For example, in addition to local K-12 and university education, approximately 200,000 tourists visit Sitka every summer.

If you want to be a part of our mission to increase the understanding and awareness of terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems of the Gulf of Alaska through education and research, become a volunteer and play an important role in supporting our work!

As a volunteer, you will be

* Learning about local ecosystems and showcasing your knowledge to visitors

* Sharing the legacy of the Sage Building and Sheldon Jackson Hatchery

* Contributing to projects that go on behind the scenes at SSSC

* Utilizing a particular skill set to enhance our capacity and quality of our programs

  • The giant aquarium is amazing, with a few of the most ugly and beautiful fish in our part of the ocean. Continuing to the tide pool/hands-on area. Who could know what a sea star or a anemone or...  more »
  • Small but excellent. If you can catch them feeding shrimp to the red pacific octopus, that's the best!  more »
  • Was not impressed at all with this place. It’s over priced and offers very little for what they charge. No discount for military (which is a lack of respect in my opinion) and they closed the gift shop 3 hours early so we could not even go in.
  • Fun little spot in Sitka, not the typical venue for cruise ship tourists but a great spot to take your kids. It's small and won't take much time but there is a lot of interesting sea life and really cool touch tanks. The workers were extremely friendly and talked with us for a while. There's a cool salmon hatchery outside that I would recommend; they provide a self guided tour sheet and you can learn about the differences between a farm and a hatchery. Good place to visit for a family.
