Windgate Vineyards & Winery, Smicksburg

3.9
#102 of 107 in Wineries in Pennsylvania
Windgate's climate in SouthWestern Pennsylvania is nearly perfect for growing wine grapes: an elevation, western slope exposure, and persistent air drainage provide warming in the winter and cooling in the summer.

Beginning as a small vineyard in the 1970's, Windgate has since become the largest estate winery in Southwestern Pennsylvania, producing many varieties of French hybrid grapes, including Marechal Foch, De Chaunac, Seyval Blanc, Vidal, Chancellor, and Chambourcin and are "planted to” several vinifera grapes: Riesling, Cabernet Franc, and Pinot Gris. • We loved it here! It is off the beaten path, so peaceful and quiet. The wines were excellent and we enjoyed the gift shop and BBQ place .  more »
  • Great atmosphere, ran into friends from years ago. Great music, ran into Terry Sabo playing there. Worth the drive.  more »

  • Great local winery. Sad to hear that they've recently sold. On the bright side, I met Amish couple (Jake Miller is the Husband) who bought it and they're going to keep the grapes and sell them as fruit (those varietals good for table grapes) and as juice (a substantial plot of concord grapes). Nice owners on both sides of the transaction, but the winery will be missed.
  • I visited this winery originally because I heard about the Appalachian Wagon Train coming through there. I only live 20 minutes away but had surprisingly never visited before. I was completely impressed with the atmosphere and the lay out of the place! It really is a hidden gem. Tucked away in the wood's down a gravel road, the place really brings forth feelings of nostalgia and comfort. The wine was excellent, I tried a glass of semi sweet, the shop inside is beautiful and the staff was so helpful and friendly. I will definitely be back again when I have more time to explore the grounds and really enjoy the atmosphere.
