Trip Planner: USA / Texas / Texas Gulf Coast / South Padre Island / South Padre Island Birding and Nature Center
Whether you’re a devoted birdwatcher or simply enjoy spending time outdoors, South Padre Island Birding and Nature Center is a great stop for your itinerary. Nestled between the Gulf of Mexico and Laguna Madre, South Padre Island’s wetlands are home to more than 300 species, including the endangered brown pelican, piping plover and peregrine falcon. Watch the documentary screened in the auditorium to learn about the island’s birds and other wildlife. Then, head to the boardwalk to spy a variety of birds. The five blinds and five story-tower are great spots for watching. The island’s rich wildlife also includes a variety of plants and animals, such as dolphins and alligators. Bring sunscreen if you’re visiting on a hot day, as most of the boardwalk doesn't offer cover. A really cool place to visit! We did the 9am guided bird walk, followed by the 11am gator talk and both were cool! It was $30 for my family of 4 to go and at first, I balked at the cost but in the end it was worth it. We were there for 4 hours and my kids had a blast! Seeing (and holding) the baby alligators was a lot of fun. I will say that they could use a little better organization. Nobody ever answered the phone when I called and prices were not clear regarding the adventure pack. The building is beautiful but some of the signage and written information was lacking. I hope they continue to work on those areas and it would be a perfect experience. ❤️
Must see place. The view from the lookout tower is incredible. The greeter is the sweets most welcoming lady. We brought our own binoculars, also bring water or sports drink. It can get steamy. The view of the birds and fish are amazing. Perfect place to come watch the tarpon fish jump out of the water.
