Tallman Mountain State Park, Sparkill

#195 of 296 in Nature in New York State
Tallman Mountain State Park is a 687acre state park in Rockland County, New York, located adjacent to the Hudson River in the Town of Orangetown just south of Piermont. It is part of the Palisades Interstate Park System.
Tallman Mountain State Park was formed in 1928 after the Palisades Interstate Park Commission moved to condemn the 164acre property of a quarry operator in an effort to preserve a portion of the Hudson River Palisades. Park facilities were improved in 1933 by Temporary Emergency Relief Administration workers, who constructed a swimming pool, recreation fields, and picnic areas. The park was expanded in 1942 with the addition of 542acre.
Tallman Mountain State Park is a day-use only park containing 5mi of hiking trails, including sections of the Long Path and the Tallman Mountain Bike Path. The park also offers a running track, tennis courts, playing fields, cross-country skiing, and picnic areas. For an additional fee, visitors may also use a pool complex within the park, operated by a private vendor under an agreement with the Palisades Interstate Park Commission since summer 2016.
The park includes part of Piermont Marsh, which is included in the Hudson River National Estuarine Research Reserve.

  • A great little historic area. This site is great for photos. We took some engagement photos there a few years ago. There is a foot bridge over a Hudson River tributary that allows for panoramic views of the Bear Mountain Bridge. There is a small historic fort area and visitor center. The main trail is easy grade with rocks. It's about half a mile from the Bear Mountain Bridge and state park. It was perfect for our 8 year old niece who is not accustomed to the outdoors. We also saw three deer!
  • I was there yesterday with my family and we had a great time. They have a live band that plays on Friday and Saturday nights. The atmosphere was wonderful. The staff was very friendly and helpful. The food was delicious. My waitress Sam was wonderful. It's has a beautiful view of the Hudson River. The only downfall was the women restrooms that were kind of dirty and need it more upkeep but otherwise, everything was great.
