The Spartanburg Arts and Crafts Council was founded in 1907 by two local artists, Josephine Sibley Couper and Margaret Law. They chose as their motto,

"Art must not be the occupation of a few, ministering to the luxury of a few; it must be a luxury for all."

Although the Arts and Crafts Council grew and evolved over the years, eventually becoming the Spartanburg Art Museum in 1968, its dedication to the spirit of that phrase never wavered. Now, over one hundred and ten years later, the Spartanburg Art Museum resides in a 3,000 square foot space located in the Chapman Cultural Center. SAM's exhibition calendar boasts a diverse range of contemporary exhibitions and offers a wide variety of educational and community programs for all ages and demographics.

SAM is funded in part by The Arts Partnership of Greater Spartanburg and its donors, the County and City of Spartanburg, and the South Carolina Arts Commission which receives support from The National Endowment for the Arts.

  • Spartanburg Art Museum and The Chapman Center have been in my daughter’s life for many years. The classes and art events are wonderful. The instructors and staff are very professional, kind, and encouraging. My family is thankful to have a place where art is still valued.
  • Great place to see local artists work.
