Spencer's Historic Tivoli Theatre was built for local artist E.M Viquesney, and designed by architect Horam Callander, Jr. With respect to the naming of the Tivoli, Viquesney undoubtedly knew of Copenhagen’s Tivoli Gardens, but humorously told people in Spencer that “TIVOLI” stood for “This Is Viquesney’s Own Little Idea”. The theater is situated on Spencer’s Courthouse Square, within sight of Viquesney’s most famous sculpture ” Spirit of the American Doughboy." The theater opened on New Years Eve 1928 with a screening of "Shopworn Angel" starring Gary Cooper and Nancy Carroll.
The Tivoli’s exterior was designed in Mission Revival style, and the interior featured an atmostpheric-style auditorium, created to resemble a Spanish courtyard. Above, a night “sky” was sprinkled with twinkling “stars." After suffering a fire in 1985, reopening, and then falling into disrepair, the Tivoli was finally closed in 1999. It is still a Spencer landmark and is on the endangered list of the Historic Landmarks Foundation of Indiana.
The Theatre was purchased by Owen County Preservation in 2005 in an attempt to save it from a scheduled demolition. In April 2012, Cook Group Incorporated announced their commitment to sponsor the preservation project on behalf of all employees of Cook Spencer. The Tivoli Theatre, which has fallen into disrepair in recent years, will be restored to its original presence on Spencer’s downtown square. Construction is underway and is scheduled for completion in 2013.

Good price on tickets. Subtitles on during weekend shows, no cushion on the seat back, and the screen is on the small side. The volunteer staff is very good.
5 dollar movies. Everything is reasonably priced. Staff is always friendly. Nice newly renovated place. Can't beat it. They sell out fast on popular movies so plan ahead.
