The historical Cathedral Basilica of St. Augustine is the seat of the Roman Catholic bishop of St. Augustine. First established in the 1560s, the cathedral was named a National Historic Landmark in 1970. The Spanish Colonial-style cathedral that stands today is the fourth attempt to establish a lasting church in the city. The three previous buildings burned down: once due to natural causes and twice from British attacks. Today's cathedral was built from coquina stone quarried from nearby to help make it more fireproof. Visit "America's First Parish" for a closer look at the colonial history of this quaint town. The church's interiors have been undergoing some reconstruction, so you might need to duck under scaffolding. This is one of the most beautiful Cathedral Basilicas that I’ve ever set foot inside! I was here for about 30 minutes and the inside was quiet, since all what could be heard was the sound of the choir singing hymns with angelic voices! I have some videos of this place as well, but stupid Google Maps no longer supports videos on it, I think. (Why it’s really like this is beyond me) Anyway, this is a truly breathtaking place which makes you fell like you are in heaven, the moment you walk in! You cannot go to St. Augustine and not visit this truly historic place, since it is the oldest church in the United States of America!
