To touch the humid walls more than two and a half centuries old of Fort Matanzas National Monument, hop on a small ferry and cross the river to this Spanish outpost fort. It's in the midst of a salt marsh and rich with wildlife. See the exact room where soldiers were sleeping, eating, and getting dressed before their duties. Up on the rooftop, you can check out the cannons that were used to guard the area. Pick up free tickets at the visitor center on the mainland. The area is suitable for picnicking. • We knew before we arrived that the ferry wasn't running that day so not holding that against them. It does look like a small "fort" compared to Fort Pulaski where we had just come from. A good...

  • This is a great little park. You need to ride the boat to get to the fort, so do plan on getting there early if you can for the best chance for a boarding pass to. By limiting it to one boat of visitors at a time, it allows for a more enjoyable visit to the fort. There are also great trails in the main part of the park that allow for efficient hikes. The rangers were great and very friendly and happy to answer any questions. Well worth a visit.
  • We visited on a whim when passing by. I had read online that the free ferry passes to the fort often "sellout" by 11:00 am so we felt lucky to get passes for the 1:30pm ferry at 1:00pm. The woman at the ticket window mentioned it was uncommon that passes we're still available. It's a quick ferry ride to the small fort, which is really more of a fortified watchtower. You're allowed around 30 minutes to explore. You're left on your own to see the large open room on the first floor, the second floor, and to climb the short steep ladder to the roof. The ladder is steep, a little shaky, and goes through a rather small opening. You won't want to climb with any purses or backpacks. The rooftop offers excellent views of the Matanzas river and surrounding area. The highlight was listening to the rangers talk about the history of the fort and Saint Augustine. They were knowledgeable and able to answer questions from the visitors. If you're unable to get a space on the ferry there's a short nature trail on property, just about .6 mile loop. We were even able to see a wild gopher tortoise on our way out of the park. Highly recommend this free activity.
