Mission of Nombre de Dios, St. Augustine

The history of Mission of Nombre de Dios dates back to Europe's early settlers on what's now U.S. soil. Florida's first Spanish settlers founded the mission in the second half of the 16th century as the religious center and a way to spread the Christian faith among the local Native American tribes. The land, close to the spot where Pedro Menendez de Aviles landed in 1565--marked by a 62 m (204 ft) tall cross--now hosts several churches and shrines. You can enjoy the serene atmosphere, visit holy sites, the mission's museum, monuments, and historic landmarks. Donations are accepted. You might want to bring insect repellent to fight off the mosquitoes. • We really enjoyed the displays in the museum as well as interaction with the knowledgeable and friendly staff. We learned quite a bit about the history of the area and the influence of the church on the early days of European expansion into the New World. The only issue we had was wishing that there were more displays and information. Well worth the visit.
  • A beautiful and peaceful place to visit. I’m surprised more people don’t take advantage of it. It’s free and self guided. Perfect place for a picnic lunch. Benches are everywhere.
