The history of Mission of Nombre de Dios dates back to Europe's early settlers on what's now U.S. soil. Florida's first Spanish settlers founded the mission in the second half of the 16th century as the religious center and a way to spread the Christian faith among the local Native American tribes. The land, close to the spot where Pedro Menendez de Aviles landed in 1565--marked by a 62 m (204 ft) tall cross--now hosts several churches and shrines. You can enjoy the serene atmosphere, visit holy sites, the mission's museum, monuments, and historic landmarks. Donations are accepted. You might want to bring insect repellent to fight off the mosquitoes. This is a definite must visit place. Walking the grounds you get a sense of peace. During our visit we even spotted dolphins in the bay. It's a wonderful place you'll want to visit often. more »
We spend Sept 7th 2019 here. Founders Day. The ceremony and Mass were excellent. The grounds, even though they were working in certain places were a wonderful to walk through. Everywhere we went was HCA. The staff were very friendly and assisted in answering any questions we had. I don't usually give out five stars but we enjoyed this place so much and we felt the peace of Our Lord Jesus Christ here, they most certainly earned it.
Amazing historical site. This is where it all began. True first Thanksgiving with Timucuan Indians.
