Moone Tsai Winery Reviews
So yeah, a tasting at Moone Tsai isn’t a tasting. It’s an experience. And it’s appointment only. If you want to guzzle down wine this place isn’t for you. If you want to actually learn some history, g... more »
Steve at Moon Tsai gave my husband and I a great experience tasting the Moone Tsai wines. These wines are full bodied, and everything you could ask for from a Phillippe Melka wine. If you are looking ... more »
This was our 12 overall winery visited, and last one of our short Napa trip. I have been a fan of Moone-Tsai Wines for a while, I got to know this wine with a friend that happens to be a Total Wine & More GM. I have several vintages in my cellar and recently drank a 2011 Moone-Tsai Hillside Blend that was out of hand, also a 2012 Napa Cabernet and it was excellent, so I really wanted to visit them. I called up my friend to see if he could get us inside the winery, after a few days I got the bad news that during our limited available spots they didn’t have anything available… so a day before flying to San-Fran I emailed the winery directly and I got a very fast reply from Steve. We tentatively set up a lunch with Moone-Tsai wine parings for our last day around 2PM… We flew to California, got in the wine mood, and I contacted Steve again because I thought there may be a conflict with our 8 pm flight and our lunch starting at 2:15pm. Guess what his genius solution was. He talked to one of the owners, Larry Tsai and let us pick the Lunch time at our convenience! So we set it up for Sunday September 30th at 12:30PM. We arrived at Brasswood Restaurant 10 minutes earlier, and the hostess told us she hasn't seen Larry all day, ummm, so we waited and waited, and 15 minutes later I texted Stephen to let him know we were already there. It turned out that Larry was outside waiting and the lady never told him we were inside waiting. Very strange of this girl not to notice the “owner” but it was not a big deal either. He was very apologetic and said he has been waiting for us. Larry took us for a little chat outside and made a little overview of how the whole complex came to existence, then we proceeded to our table were a lineup of: Moone-Tsai Chardonnay, Moone-Tsai Cabernet “The Black List”, Moone-Tsai Howell Mountain Hillside Blend, and the bigger boy (because to me all of these wines are big boys) Moone-Tsai Cor Leonis Cabernet Sauvignon! The idea of doing this wine paring tasting at a restaurant is brilliant, there is no better way to enjoy wine and really appreciate it then to pair it with a good food and nice conversation while tasting! Getting into the wines, my girlfriend and I loved the Chardonnay, as a side story we shared with Larry, the very first time we drank a bottle of Chardonnay was July 4th 2017 and it was Moone-Tsai, since then we started drinking Chards on a regular basis and Moone-Tsai is one of our favorites. The Howell Mountain Hillside Blend was excellent as I expected but I was more intrigued by “The Black List” and Cor Leonis since I had never tasted those. This is what a wine lover dreams about, get the opportunity to taste new (high end) wine with food and nice people sharing experiences! So these 2 wines were exceptional, the Black List despite the label stating 100% cabernet, I was able to pick up a little Petit Verdot on it, Larry was impressed and admitted to adding a few drops of Petit Verdot but not enough to publish it! I thought I was going to get a free lunch but it didn’t happen – LOL! The Cor Leonis is a full-body+ wine with lots of floral notes and an endless finish. I want to mention that the food was very good, small plates but delicious, the time we spent with Larry was memorable and the service from Steve (whom we briefly met) was topnotch. We learned so much about their wines, history and much more that I’m not going to continue so be sure to book your visit and experience it all for yourself… It’s hard for me to select which was my favorite experience while in Napa, what is very easy to say without a doubt is that this Moone-Tsai lunch pairing wine tasting is at the very top 3 and Larry was quite the host!!!
