Create an itinerary including Shell Key Shuttle
Shell Key Shuttle offers eco-friendly tours of a small barrier island sheltering sensitive marine habitats and serving as an important nesting and wintering area for various shore birds. This tour operator takes visitors to the part of the island open to the public, providing easy access to some of Florida's finest shelling, swimming, and bird- and dolphin-watching areas. Beach umbrellas and snorkeling masks are included in your ticket price, so all you have to bring is sunscreen and a towel. Although shuttle reservations aren't required, these tours operate in good weather only, so be sure to check the forecast before your visit. Boat rides to the island are about 10 minutes long; sunset cruises are available on certain days. Check the online visitor guide and call to confirm shuttle departure and return times. • THE BEST!! Don't waste your money on a "sand dollar island" tour. They take you to shell key and charge 4x the price of the shuttle. Our family of four was there from 10:00 to 2:00, and had a wonderful time. Bring a snorkel and mask or borrow one - you won't be disappointed - and definitely take advantage of the loaner beach umbrella they give you. Pack lunch and ample ice cold water and you'll be set! Make sure you arrive at least 40-45 minutes prior to the departure time as the line to purchase tickets gets quite long. I also recommend taking the first shuttle of the day as the current off the island gets pretty wicked by afternoon. P.S. We found 36 sand dollars, a huge whelk shell and many many conch shells. Plus unlimited other small shells.
  • Fun trip to a small preserve island off of pass a grill. I enjoyed the ride and the staff was very nice. They offered umbrellas, mask, snorkel to borrow on trip. They also gave us shell collecting bags and an informative sheet at the end of the different types of birds and shells we saw. Would highly recommend for a couple hours or day trip if you bring a portable bathroom. You can also buy a parking pass for much cheaper than the meter.
