Chihuly Collection, St. Petersburg

#2 of 19 in Museums in St. Petersburg
Chihuly Collection houses the only permanent collection of artist Dale Chihuly, whose glass sculptures have graced the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Louvre. Highlights include the Ruby Red Icicle Chandelier, commissioned specifically for the museum, which hangs from the ceiling. With spikes poking out at all angles, the chandelier resembles a sea anemone. For an in-depth look at Chihuly’s work, take a tour led by one of the museum’s knowledgeable docents. You can buy a combination ticket, which will allow you to finish the experience by stopping by the Glass Studio & Hot Shop to watch glassblowers create new works. • The glass was beautiful, but you pay $20 to spend about 10 minutes looking at what they have on display.... it's like 3 rooms. The collection needs to be much larger to justify the ticket price. Do yourself a favor and just go across the street to watch the glass blowing presentation. It's free and quite entertaining. Buy a beautiful, and reasonably priced, artwork there to support the local artists.
  • We traveled all the way from a tiny Caribbean island to see this exhibition of some of the worlds greatest glass art. It was worth the trip. This was one of three exhibitions we visited (Dali and the Glass Museum) and it was, by the far, the most awe inspiring of them. A little pricey? Yes. Worth it? Yes. One of the few galleries we've been where taking photos was encouraged. 2 hours isn't long enough. Take your time and enjoy it. You'll walk out smiling.
