On June 13, 1972, Weedon Island Preserve was added to the U.S. National Register of Historic Places. In 1974 the state of Florida purchased Weedon Island and its surrounding islands and it officially opened for public use in December 1980. In 1993, the state created a lease agreement with Pinellas County to manage and maintain the preserve. The county's Department of Parks and Conservation Resources presently manages the area.
Weedon Island Preserve's name is derived from Tampa doctor and amateur archaeologist, Leslie Washington Weedon.
Weedon Island Preserve reviews
Lovely greenery. Nice walking paths. Very well put together. No flowers. Resting stops are very nice but there are not many of them more »
This is a very large park on Tampa Bay with lots of green space. There are plenty of trails for walking/hiking, picnic areas, boat ramps, kayaks, so much to do! View wildlife, learn about the flora... more »
We are from the north and love hiking. This was a great walk. We did two good sized loops and got to walk up the lookout tower. We saw some birds and tons of geckos. For us, it was fun. We like to do free, off the tourist trail activities to balance out restaurants and hotel stuff. This was great. Basically empty on a Sunday morning and we had great conversations with our kids just enjoying the atmosphere. It’s not fancy but it’s peaceful.
Beautiful and interesting walking trail with lots so see and so many birds. The overlooks are serene and at dusk, wear mosquito spray but it's almost magical the way the fish jump and the wind gently blows. Great for a reflective solo trip or romantic walk. Explore and make sure to download Google maps before you go Incase you want to see where you are. Great that it's free to visit and free to park as well!
