Teaching is an art, not a science. A great knowledge of the subject matter doesn’t help your students if you don’t know how to present it in the classroom. You also must know how to tap into your students’ lives and know how they think, how they struggle, where their passions lie, and how cultural influences affect them. For travelers who use our international travel planner, Steubenville holidays become easier to arrange, with trips to the Franciscan University of Steubenville and other attractions mapped out and timetabled.
Education majors at Franciscan University learn the art of teaching the whole person: opening minds with truth and forming hearts through a loving concern. In your classes you will learn how to bring the rich Catholic understanding of human dignity into every teaching situation, helping your students be formed in body, mind, and spirit.
Franciscan offers four different licensure programs: early childhood, middle childhood, adolescent to young adult, and intervention specialist (mild/moderate needs). Each program deals with the challenges faced by that particular group and how to help those students. All of the programs cover the basics of running a class, as well as philosophies of education techniques and approaches, and how to navigate different school environments.
Field experience begin early in the program, where you get to see put into action the theories you learn in the classroom. The many andvaried classrooms you observe through the years, along with student teaching during your final senior semester provide you a healthy base of experience to draw upon down the road.
The total program includes 36 hours of class work in education classes, followed by the Teacher Education Program. This program is rigorous. It will require a serious commitment of your time and energy, but the rewards are well worth the hours spent. Our graduates leave prepared to face the challenges of education, and to guide their students to develop intellectually, morally, and spiritually.

When you drive up the hill to the University, it doesn't even feel like you're in Steubenville anyore. The University is like a whole new beautiful world up there. I really enjoyed my time here as a student.
This school of amazing. The teachers very well versed in a diversity of subjects, particularly Catholic history, doctrine, values, and philosophy. Ooohhh the classes I wanted to take got just could not due to time frame issues, finances, et cetera. Embracing living Catholic in actions, household groups, counselors, 24 hour a day access to Eucharistic adoration, chapels for prayer in every dormitory. Household groups met together, made plans of goals to work toward, celebrated The Lord's Day ever Saturday, retreats and activities. There were opportunities to a participate in the Mass, in the morning, noon and evening. Frequently scheduled Confessions, and, when needed, immediate access to the Sacrament of Reconciliation. There were celebrations for Easter that would last with praise for hours, almost till dawn. The monthly Festivals of Praise were so uplifting and rejuvenating. Friends, true friends for life. Good times, game nights, Domino's (and that other pizza delivery place. It might have been Four Star. Waiting in the lobby of the depth to see if the 30 minute rule was done it get free pizza.) (For those with cars and local knowledge Iggy's was the best. There was something the pepperoni flavor or anything that just made it better. Maybe it was that you orders by the slice then they were topped and final baked. I had it just a couple years ago, still greasy and delicious! I had to go to Toronto to get it, but definitely was worth it "Leap Night" (Quantum Leap) at Tommy Moore, games and conversations, hard times, always there for each other. Hugs, just God and the two of us. Mother Mary and our Angels and other patron saints were brought in as we prayed. God living in and through us in our daily activities of living, interactive with others. The best Catholic University the world!
