Reach the very top of Vermont with a climb up Mount Mansfield State Forest, the state's highest mountain. With a summit over 1,300 m (4,300 ft) above sea level, this peak is one of only three spots in Vermont where alpine tundra survives from as far back as the last Ice Age. Said to resemble a human profile, and most distinct when viewed from the east, the mountain offers visitors different views via several hiking trails. Some of the most popular trails start from a state park located on the western side of the mountain, where the terrain naturally provides a good shelter from adverse weather conditions. I summited the Mountain. Breathtaking fall views. I could see lake Champlain from the top. A challenging hike but well worth it.

Great views of Vermont! Lived in this state my entire life and is a great hike. The toll road is wonderful for people who don't really like hiking and still want a view, and there are some easier trails like the sunset ridge and more difficult trails like Hellbrook, both of which I have done. In addition at the peak there is a small side trail that goes through a really cool cave like rock formation called subway. Being the tallest mountain in Vermont it is definitely worthy of your time to go up whether its an easy hike, a challenge that your sure to remember, or a hour trip to the parking lot at the top and a quick walk along the ridge. Definitely recommended.

Mount Mansfield State Forest- We walked the section of this extensive area called Adams Camp, or the “Ranch”. Sunrise Mountain Tours led our group and told us about the nature in the forest as well as an abandoned camp along the trail. The trail we walked was fairly even and flat and followed a small River most of the way. The forest is multi-use, it was pretty with the foliage- but is also used for back country, and cross country skiing, snowshoes, and maybe paths for snowmobiles but I’m not sure on that. Sunrise Mountains Tours were great and if you’re looking for a guided tour in the area check them out. They offer hikes for all different skill levels if you want a climb that’s more challenging or and intro to snowshoeing, etc.
