Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve is a United States National Preserve located in the Flint Hills region of Kansas, north of Strong City. The preserve protects a nationally significant example of the once vast tallgrass prairie ecosystem. Of the 400,000 square miles (1,000,000 km2) of tallgrass prairie that once covered the North American continent, less than 4% remains, primarily in the Flint Hills. Since 2009, the preserve has been home to the growing Tallgrass Prairie bison herd.

  • Always great to see areas that are unique in the country. The Southwind Trail is easy and 1.8 miles for an overview. Nice overlook spot along the trail. Nice visitor center. Helpful rangers...  more »
  • One of my favorite places on Earth. This is the heart of Kansas. There isn't much of the tall rass prairie left, so visiting this preserve is a must. There are miles of trails and and the some of the most gorgeous views you can find in the state. You can see bison on certain trails too. Great visitors center as well, helpful staff and interesting items for sale. Dogs are allowed on certain trails.
  • Tallgrass Prairie is a beautiful preserve that really lets you experience just how quiet nature really is. With a lot of more well known areas people bring a lot of noise with them but here you can really experience a natural silence. If you look close enough you can see small animals scurry buy and birds soaring past.
