Door County Historical Museum, Sturgeon Bay

4.9
The Door County Historical Museum was founded in 1939 by Harry Dankohler, a former newspaper publisher and passionate advocate for Door County history. The museum has seen big changes since those early days, going from a one-room exhibit of Door County curiosities to a modern, multi-level facility showcasing every facet of our county's rich and varied history. What hasn't changed in our 75 years of operation is the dedication of our curators and volunteers to "Uncle" Harry's original dream: a world class museum for Door County, free and open to all.

The Door County Historical Museum offers exhibits on every phase of county history, from the prehistoric Cambrian seas to the modern day. The Pioneer Fire Station features beautifully maintained historic fire engines and a fully functional vintage jail cell, while the Seasons of Life diorama in our main lobby provides a stunning recreation of Door County's famous natural beauty. The museum's maticulously prepared displays, huge variety of historical artifacts and comittment to hands-on history for all ages have led to the DCHM being named the "Best Small Museum in the Midwest" by the Chicago Tribune.

We are open seven days a week from 10:00am - 5:00pm (Doors lock at 4:30pm) from May 1 through October 31 every year. Admission is free, with donations gratefully accepted.

  • This is a fantastic place to visit and you can't beat the price. You will be encouraged to donate and once you see what's here you should find its worth it. A very extensive collection in a small space. Exhibits range from natural habit, to historical events, 1800s era artifacts (and some older). You could easily see everything quickly in 30 minutes if you don't read many if the descriptions. We took our time and spent around an hour with no kids along, and I feel like I could easily go back again and get more out of it.
  • Nice little museum. Spent an hour or so there. Many different things to see. Kids really liked the firetrucks and animals.
