The Discovery Center Reviews
He was extremely knowledgeable about the birds and very personable and easy to talk to. He knew many facts about the birds in the aviary and could include many funny anecdotes about them. more »
The Discovery Center is terrific. It's a beautiful building on the lake. There are lots of fun exhibits-including live critters-indoors, an aviary with non-releasable birds of prey, and an avian Grand... more »
Great place for taking the family to learn and enjoy nature. There are programs every day (typical sheduled at 11 and 2) lead by the staff, usually the naturalists. The staff is knowledgable and accommodating. The top floor boasts a gift shop with some local made items, souvenirs, and science toys. All if that pales in comparison to the beautiful exibits of fish, amphibians, and reptiles all with stories and information. Insider tip: for the adventurous types, the naturalist are always happy to take out an animal and tell you their stories if you ask (if they haven't already asked you) and you may even get to touch them 😉. The bottom floor has books, puzzles, animal displays, and more (and bathrooms for those who were wondering). This floor is more suited to those seeking natural resources information and youngsters. Outside towards the lake there is a dock and some walking trails connecting you to the rest of the park. On the far side of the paking lot (the side furthest from the Discovery Center) there is a sign that says "Aviary" if you go through the little hole in the woods right next to that sign you'll find ten non-releasable birds of prey. One of my all time favorite nature/science centers. (Although, being an employee this may skew my opinions slightly😉)
On vacation with family, we discovered this place. it was a great place to take a break from the lake, and to get the kids some interesting facts about wildlife and about the Deep Creek Lake Area animals. The information about the birds of prey was most interesting. The girl who gave the talk was fascinating and humorous. Watching them feed the birds was a great experience for our kids. We would definitely recommend this to anyone living in the area, as well as those who travel into Deep Creek Lake to visit.
