  • A largely unknown hidden gem of the Westside, even. Kern County as a whole! Anyone that has yet to pay a visit is living life incomplete, seriously. Run and kept up by a staff of VOLUNTEERS, all whom qualify as Senior Citizens; hell there is even a 94 year old on staff that can outwork you or I on her worst day! The premises is sprawling, sitting on at minimum 2-4 acres of land in perfect positioning for a OIL MUSEUM, right of the side of the Taft Highway and the Wood Street turn off...if you somehow miss it then just keep going cause you aren't worthy of the experience the many layers and elements the West Kern would be treating you and your entire entourage to. Fun fact: when Paul Thomas Anderson was scouting for his movie "There Will Be Blood", he got the blueprint for the oil Derrick portrayed in the film from the West Kern Oil Museum's blueprint and replica full scale oil Derrick on site at the museum itself!
  • A must visit when traveling through California's oil country stretching from McKittrick onward through Taft, California. Museum is packed with artifacts, photographs, and models derived from the past and present. Docents are impeccable and steeped in oil field history and lore. The museum is clean and comfortable. Highly recommended as an adjunct to any history class from middle school through University. When visiting, don't forget to say hello too Pauline! Cheers.
