Little did they know, the adventure that Creighton and McKenzie Gallagher embarked upon—crafting a vineyard from their third generation, northern Michigan cherry farm—echoed the intrepid spirits of their Irish ancestors and uncovered a heritage long forgotten.
Over three hundred years ago, thousands of Irish fled their native land and spread across the world in what has become widely known as the Flight of the Wild Geese. The little-known fact? Many of the Wild Geese went on to become winemakers, establishing what are now some of the most renowned wineries in France, Australia, and the United States. Today, the few who know this piece of history refer to these forgotten Irish craftsman and their ancestors as the “WineGeese.”
The Gallaghers named their winery Rove Estate, paying homage to the unsung heroes who paved the way for winemakers today, to the generations of immigrants that tilled and shaped our lands, and to all those who dare to dream or sail uncharted seas.
With this adventurous spirit in mind, the Gallaghers established not just the region’s highest standards in winemaking, but also its highest vineyard. Perched at an elevation of over 1100 feet, Rove Estate offers a perspective of the Leelanau countryside that’s rarely been appreciated, with stunning views previously hidden from even long-time locals.
The year’s stormy weather, the type of grapes on the vine, the leathery hands of the workers that picked each one—these are the things that make up the story of every vintage. Just as every family has its story to tell, so does every glass of wine.

I really hate to give such a nice winery a lower review but service means a lot which I had some trouble with. I also wish that the indoor section was a larger. It was raining when we went there and felt very snug inside with everyone standing around. I loved the white wines, my girlfriend and I both got flights of different white wines. The 2016 Chardonnay is the best I’ve had so far and we even bought a bottle. Everything else seemed to fall short, after we were served our flights we wanted to order a snack so we tried but some groups came in & it got busy. The server said we will have to wait because the limited staff couldn’t serve drinks and get the food made. We said sure, we didn’t mind waiting but I think he honestly forgot about it. After that we finished our wine and continued waiting, we looked at the drink menu and decided we wanted to try some other wines. Nobody came back to check on us (even after it cleared out significantly) and it was supposed to be a special birthday night. We decided that we’d just get the ‘16 Chardonnay and head out. We really wanted to try more from this place but didn’t get the chance. I probably wouldn’t come back here for that reason but I will definitely consider ordering the Chardonnay online.
Amazing vineyard that’s so trendy and cute! It’s affordable to do a tasting and they have tasty wines to choose from! Definitely one of the best in Traverse City.
