It is situated on a barrier island in the Gulf of Mexico.As of the 2010 census, the city population was 6,705.GeographyAccording to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 5.3 square miles (13.8 km²), of which 1.6 square miles (4.1 km²) is land and 3.7 square miles (9.7 km²) (70.11%) is water.DemographicsAs of the census of 2000, there were 7,450 people, 4,128 households, and 2,059 families residing in the city. The population density was 4,679.0 inhabitants per square mile (1,809.1/km²). There were 5,694 housing units at an average density of 3,576.2 per square mile (1,382.7/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 97.69% White, 0.28% African American, 0.28% Native American, 0.59% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.43% from other races, and 0.70% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.23% of the population.
