Wahkeena Falls, Troutdale

#3 of 10 in Things to do in Troutdale
Waterfall · Nature / Park
Wahkeena Falls is a 242-foot (73 m) waterfall in the Columbia River Gorge in the state of Oregon.
The waterfall is unlike nearby Multnomah Falls in that the water does not directly plunge to the ground. Wahkeena Falls, rather, has a more subtle cascading flow. These falls have been featured in numerous travel guides and in photography books.
Spellings of this name are dubious because the word is an English transliteration of a Native American (reportedly Yakama) phrase meaning most beautiful.

Wahkeena Falls is along the Historic Columbia River Highway, about 13 miles (21 km) east of Troutdale, Oregon. A 0.2-mile (320 m) hike from the parking lot at the base leads to the stone bridge that crosses the main part of the falls. That trail continues on east to Multnomah Falls, the next falls to the east.

This waterfall is visible directly from the Historic Columbia River Highway.

  • We couldn't hike at Multnomah Falls so we went to the Wahkeena Falls trail. You can hike to Fairy Falls which worked well for us. It's a beautiful hike. It's a pretty steep trail - all up and then...  more »
  • I'm hardly bashing Multnomah, but is a horribly crowded tourist trap, and there are countless other beautiful waterfalls along beautiful trails to be discovered, such as this one .... and its only...  more »
  • A beautiful waterfall with a great trail after you see it. Falls appear smaller on pictures but dont be fooled, its mesmerizing. Very easy to get to after the small incline. Also if your up for the challenge you can always check out fairy falls on the same trail. Perfect spot to appreciate nature.
  • Maybe my favorite falls of the whole area. Truly gorgeous photos at the top of the short walk. I did the walk up in about 20 minutes. It’s not a very difficult hike, but I found it necessary to rest a few times on the way up. Worth the walk for the up close and personal view of the Falls.
