It is located 30 miles north of Scranton, PA. The mountain has been given favorable reviews from Ski Magazine, including a listing in "Six Unsung Heroes", a roundup of hidden gems in skiing.HistoryElk Mountain opened in 1959. The ski area provided a small lodge, a 2200ft T-Bar ski lift, tow rope lifts and a small number of trails. In 1961 a double chair lift was installed, allowing for additional trails. A year later, in 1962, snowmaking was added along with a new A-frame lodge at the base of the mountain. Night skiing came to Elk Mountain in 1966—expanding to more trails in 1972. Elk Mountain built a 4000ft long quad chairlift in 1994.Skiing at Elk MountainNorth Chair at Elk Mountain accesses a top elevation of 2667ft—the highest lift-serviced skiing in eastern Pennsylvania. Elk has a 925ft vertical drop, 27 trails (six greens, 10 blues and 11 diamonds) and two terrain parks. Five double chair lifts and a fixed-grip quad chair lift provide access to the top of the mountain. Four of the lifts, including the quad, run from the base to just below the summit of the mountain. Most ski runs are groomed, but a few are allowed to bump up, or become moguled, to allow for additional challenge. The mountain receives, on average, 5 feet of natural snow per season. Snowmaking covers 100% of the of skiable terrain. The base complex features a day lodge, guest services, ski school center, restaurant, rentals, and a ski-and-snowboard shop. • Took my two intermediate-level kids this past weekend and had a terrific time. It's a bit "old school" but honestly it was a welcome change. Reminded me of skiing when I was a kid. Love that they have a picnic area for bringing in your own food (though their cafeteria is well stocked and reasonably priced too). - Couple of years later, still a great place to ski. They could improve the speed of the rentals though - only complaint!
  • This past week, I joined a group of friends to go skiing after a decades long lapse. Elk Mountain was the perfect place to get back on a ski trail. I needed to rent all my ski equipment. The rental shop employees were so nice! While the equipment was a little beat up, it served its purpose, and the boots were warm and dry. Skiing with an RFID card was new for me. But really, so very easy to use. My first challenge was walking up stairs in ski boots, lugging along skis and poles. I hadn't even walked in ski boots for so many years. I wasn't too sure how I was going to do this. A lovely member of the ski patrol quickly helped me out by taking the ski equipment to the top of the stairs. So very kind!!! After 2 exploratory runs on the beginner's slope, I was ready to take on more. The runs were groomed well, with no noticeable ice. That must be a record for Northeastern ski resorts! The chairlift lines were non-existent, and the operators were careful to make sure we loaded on safely. My skiing wasn't pretty. But I was so delighted to be back on skis, proving to myself I could still do this. Further, there was a nice range of novice and intermediate trails of a decent length. Best of all, was the small group of friends I was with. We would ski together, split off, meet up again, and so on. So much fun!!!! Even as we left, everyone that worked at Elk Mountain was so polite and friendly. Thank you for making my return to the slopes such an exhilarating, easy, fun experience!!!
