  • Close to DC but a world apart. Great hikes (some easy on dirt roads,others narrow,rarely used paths) through varied landscapes. I only wish the old dump site along the otherwise beautiful Mounds...  more »
  • I often bike from the house to the Merkle Wildlife Sanctuary, 7 miles. It's an excellent viewing spot for migratory birds. They have an excellent wildlife center, geared toward students.  more »
  • The sanctuary has three walking trails, ranging in distance from 1.2 to 3.0 miles. But they also have astronomy observation evenings monthly (when open) and activities for kids. Great place for either the family, a field trip, or even a solo walk!
  • Beautiful sanctuary...have never seen so many dragonflies and butterflies! Also several trails and bird watching areas available right along the Patuxent. Inside the visitor center, there are several live reptiles to see.
