The Solomon Gulch Hatchery reviews
We had passed the hatchery several times before stopping to take the self guided tour this time. It was not salmon season but the video displays told the whole story very well. Easily worth an hour. more »
A great free place to see fish and sea lions hanging out. Great for a short trip. Make sure to take pictures of the water and the waterfall being it too. Go too far and you will hit a restricted... more »
A great place to see how salmon (pink and coho salmon) play such a large part in Alaska"s fishing industry. There are plenty of interactive displays that discuss the life cycle of the salmon, their importance to the industry and ecosystem, and the environment. Seeing the weir that deflects the salmon into the harvest area is beat, and there's always at least one Stellar Sea Lion hanging out at the weir feasting on some fresh fish. You'll see the salmon trying to make it upstream, the fish ladder, and a great view of the bay and Solon Gulch. A must-see when you visit Valdez.
Worth the trip! The pink salmon were running and the sea lions were feasting. Watching the true natural show the sight was one of a kind. Would highly recommend.
