The Park

The Utah Field House of Natural History has been an integral part of the community of Vernal and Uintah County for nearly 70 years. The museum, established in 1948, serves the purpose of collecting, conserving and preserving, studying, interpreting, assembling and exhibiting objects (collections) of scientific and historical significance to the public for its instruction and enjoyment. The museum, with its exhibits and collections, was first located at 235 E. Main, but little room was available for expanding programs, and in 2004 the museum was moved two blocks east to 496 E. Main, in a state of the art facility.

The museum exhibits, which include prehistoric garden models, provide an opportunity for visitors to experience the unique geological and paleontological story of the Uinta Basin and Mountains. The museum showcases the regions Mesozoic dinosaurs and Eocene fossils, and is a portal for the Flaming Gorge-Uintas National and Dinosaur Diamond Scenic byways.

The museum provides not only a fun and learning experience for visitors through its professional designed exhibits, but also provides visitor information on the area, items in the museum store for purchase, scientific and education programs for school groups and other individuals. In addition, the museum also is used as a community center for events, meetings, and some birthday parties.

Our programs and collections form a marvelous partnership as each promotes and strengthens the others value. Programs are designed around the uniqueness of the collection, and collections provide the heart for the programs. The museum staff that is devoted to interpreting the natural history, brings to visitors and students alike a deeper appreciation and understanding of the specimens value.

  • Oh my goodness, I don't know how this place isn't so busy!!! The wonderful front desk worked so well with our large group! The kids loved how nice and interactive they have made the exhibits. There was so much for kids and adults to do. This museum is definitely a must if you are visiting vernal. Also they price is extremely reasonable. Adults are only $8, kids are $4 and ages 5 and under are free. They also have a $50 season pass if you wanted to go more and a senior discount.
  • Super cool exhibits take you from end of time to the other. Kids loved it, very chill walk through prehistory. You get to see fossils from Precambrian, Cenozoic, JURASSIC and all points in between. Super clever layout, make sure you go the right way though, for some reason we started at the top, you should start at the first floor with the video and work your way up. Just right if the brachiosaurus neck, then it takes you through a dig site and a journey through a time portal. Very fun for kids and fans of paleontology or geology. Free parking, gift shop, friendly staff.
