At U.S.S. Cairo Museum see one of the boats built by the North during the Civil War. The ironclad ship was constructed to help take control of the lower Mississippi River. Shortly after launching, it was was hit by two torpedoes and sank. The remains were lifted from the bottom of the Mississippi in 1962 and transported to Vicksburg. You can visit the reconstructed ship, an excellent example of early modern warfare engineering, under a shaded pavilion.   • It is difficult to believe that seven of these gunboats were built in one hundred days. The workload had to be tremendous. I found the Cairo to be fascinating. To be on the deck of such an important piece of history was awe inspiring.
  • Amazing. This piece of history was brought up from the river in three pieces. We are now in a tech age. When you can actually see what these men are out of and the way they groomed it is just unreal to us in this day and age.
