Voyageurs National Park

Bodies of Water · Geologic Formations · Gardens
Heart of the Continent
Minnesota calls itself "The Land of 10,000 Lakes," and a good number of these lie inside of Voyageurs National Park. Whereas a car provides access into most national parks, here canoes, kayaks, and boats rule. Waterways connect to one another in this corner of the north woods, and the park's biggest landmass, the Kabetogama Peninsula, is only accessible by water vessel. Boat charters are available for visitors who don't bring their own, allowing anyone to access the park's land-based hiking and camping. Both land and water provide prime wildlife viewing; moose, wolves, black bears, white-tailed deer, foxes, otters, and snowshoe hares all make their home here, and surveys record the presence of 58 bird species on average, including eagles, each year. The park provides different scenery throughout the year, with plenty of green in the summer, colorful foliage in the fall, and white snow covering the land and frozen lakes in winter.
