Lathrop State Park is a Colorado state park located 3 miles (4.8 km) west of Walsenburg. The state purchased the property in 1962 and opened Colorado's first state park here later that same year. It is named after Harold Lathrop, the first director of state parks. The park features two lakes, Martin Lake and Horseshoe Lake, that offer fishing for tiger muskie (46-inch, 25-pound examples have been caught here), rainbow trout, bass, catfish, northern pike, blue gill, saugeye, and wipers.
The park also offers a beach, boating, water skiing, wind surfing, jet skiing, picnicking, hiking, wildlife viewing, camping, and a nine-hole golf course.
Lathrop is the only Colorado state park with its own golf course. The Walsenburg Golf Course was founded in 1965 and after two years of construction opened in 1967. It was built by 50 Walsenburg citizens and many local volunteers in a public/private partnership. The course's restaurant/lounge overlooks the lakes and the National Natural Landmark Spanish Peaks.

Over 107,000 visitors passed through Lathrop State Park in the last year for which figures are available.

  • We really enjoyed walking around the lake. Path looks new, it's really clean, and it's about the right distance for a nice chat filled stroll. I do wish there was an option for a weekly parking pass instead of 1 day or annual, otherwise we had a great time. Note: nicest bathroom is at the welcome center. The latrines around the lake are what you would expect.
  • Beautiful Park! Went to listen to blues band and the band was excellent! Food was decent. The service, however, was tragic. The waitress either didn't put our order in, or the POS system wasn't working. After an hour of waiting, seeing people who arrived much later than us eating, I inquired about our order. I was told by the waitress, " he's working on it". Approximately 15 minutes we were told our order had not gotten in and they refunded our money. We ordered the food before the band even started playing! The band played for 2 hours. The last of the food came about 10 minutes before they stopped playing. Bottom line: Very Poor Service, just okay food!@$#&
