Watch City

The heart of the American Industrial Revolution and an important place for the labor movement, Waltham was a prototype of industrial city planning in the 19th century. Nowadays, the population of about 60,000 is invested in higher education or research, but the destination is still commonly known as "Watch City" in remembrance of the watch industry that once thrived here. In the historical Waltham Watch Factory district, some of the former manufacturing warehouses now host art associations, musical groups, and gallery spaces. A tour on foot is the best way to see the city, especially along the riverwalk. This promenade is often crowded with fishermen, joggers, and visitors; it runs along an avenue known for its dining, shopping, and small art galleries.
