Brainard Lake Recreation Area, Ward

#378 of 970 in Outdoors in Colorado
Brainard Lake Recreation Area is open year round to the public for many outdoor activities! Trails from the BLRA lead into the Indian Peaks Wilderness for enjoyment of many lakes and peaks! During the winter months, admission is free! You do, however, have to traverse about 2 miles that can be driven the rest of the year!

I have created this page as a place to share my photos and stories of this area with the public! Please feel free to post your experiences on this page! I hope this will become a page where folks can gather information about current snow and trail conditions!
For travelers who use our online itinerary creator, Ward holidays become easier to arrange, with trips to the Brainard Lake Recreation Area and other attractions mapped out and timetabled.

  • An amazing place. You can be there even during winter. It gets really windy, so be prepared for the cold. Also saw some animal paws over the fresh snow- just be careful. Worthy visit
  • This is one of our favorite places close to Boulder that we like to go for picnics. This is kid and pet friendly. This is also a trailhead for many different trails with various difficulty/ease levels. The parking lot is big. The lake is good size too. Although we have not done anything other than go on hikes, we always see people doing lot of activities in the lake like fishing, stand up paddle board, canoeing, etc. We have also seen moose grazing in this area, which we are told is a very common sight. All in all a great place to be on a sunny weekend!
