Create an itinerary including Brainard Lake Recreation Area
Brainard Lake Recreation Area is open year round to the public for many outdoor activities! Trails from the BLRA lead into the Indian Peaks Wilderness for enjoyment of many lakes and peaks! During the winter months, admission is free! You do, however, have to traverse about 2 miles that can be driven the rest of the year!

I have created this page as a place to share my photos and stories of this area with the public! Please feel free to post your experiences on this page! I hope this will become a page where folks can gather information about current snow and trail conditions!
For travelers who use our online itinerary creator, Ward holidays become easier to arrange, with trips to the Brainard Lake Recreation Area and other attractions mapped out and timetabled.

  • Reservations are required but are worth the effort. The reservations come out two weeks in advance at 8am, and I had no issue acquiring the parking lot I wanted. I parked at the Long Lake trailhead and hiked to Lake Isabelle. There were two huge bull moose eating breakfast as the sun rose at the lake. Truly incredible!
  • Hiked from the Winter Trailhead parking lot. Went to Long Lake and then Mitchell Lake. Snow is very deep in most areas. Snowshoes are definitely recommended. Not needed until you get to the actual trails. Hiking along the closed road you might need Yak Trax/Spikes.
