Brainard Lake Recreation Area is open year round to the public for many outdoor activities! Trails from the BLRA lead into the Indian Peaks Wilderness for enjoyment of many lakes and peaks! During the winter months, admission is free! You do, however, have to traverse about 2 miles that can be driven the rest of the year!

I have created this page as a place to share my photos and stories of this area with the public! Please feel free to post your experiences on this page! I hope this will become a page where folks can gather information about current snow and trail conditions!
For travelers who use our online itinerary creator, Ward holidays become easier to arrange, with trips to the Brainard Lake Recreation Area and other attractions mapped out and timetabled.

  • It was a 2 1/2 mile hike from Gateway trail towards Brainard lake. The place was very scenic and I’m going to shout out a huge thank you to Burke who called in a ride to take us back to the parking area when it started to rain heavy. It was very much appreciated!
  • Spent decades up here, it was way better before being appropriated by the feds. Still great, though.
