Frozen Head State Park, Wartburg

#37 of 102 in Wildlife in Tennessee
Frozen Head State Park and Natural Area is situated in the beautiful Cumberland Mountains of eastern Tennessee. The 24,000 acres of relatively undisturbed forest contain some of the richest wildflowers areas in Tennessee. The mountainous terrain varies from an elevation of 1,340 feet to over 3,000 feet on 16 different mountain peaks. Frozen Head, elevation of 3,324, is one of the highest peaks in Tennessee west of the Great Smoky Mountains. From its observation tower on a clear day, one can plainly see the Cumberland Plateau, Tennessee Ridge and Valley, and the Great Smoky Mountains. In winter, the mountain peaks are often capped with snow or ice while the lower valleys remain unadorned, thus giving the park's namesake, Frozen Head. The park's lush vegetation, small streams, waterfalls and beautiful mountains make Frozen Head one of Tennessee's most scenic parks.

  • Nice hidden gem of a state park. Hiked up the fairly rocky but wide trail to Debord Falls. Nice little falls, stairs down to the creek for a better view are a little tricky and the handrail could use....  more »
  • Went out Saturday to the Heritage Festival at Frozen Head State Park. Yes, it was chilly even around noon time. The park was good but the Festival was not as good or big like previous years.  more »
  • Beautiful place for whole family. If you looking for a spot to camp or picnicking this is the place . It is all primitive but very clean and nice. The staff is very helpful. Don't do like us and forget the bug spray if you hike the nats will drive you crazy before you get back to your vehicle. We took the white trail to judge branch then the yellow trail back to parking lot . I would suggest you do the opposite yellow to white either way about 4 miles was worth the effort. This park is a must see. By way don't attempt pulling a camper to this park. Road is very narrow drive in and enjoy.
  • One of my favorite places to camp. The park is very well kept. The bath houses are well placed and clean. There are ample hiking trails and things to see. The sites are pretty good sized and spaced far enough so you don't feel crowded. We are tent campers and there are plenty of tent spaces and we have never been stuck next to an RV. We always enjoy camping here.
