See more than 3,000 pieces of artwork at The Phillips Collection, from French Impressionism to American Modernism. The collection features masterpieces of van Gogh, Picasso, Renoir, Monet, and El Greco, among others. Explore the gallery with the Migration Series--60 paintings of Jacob Lawrence, representing movement of African Americans from the rural South to the urban North amidst the world wars. Enter the Wax Room, a small cubical chamber coated entirely with scented beeswax, illuminated by one single light bulb. Ask the staff about audio tours and phone application guides. Fantastic museum, worth the price of admission. Tucked into a cute street off DuPont Circle, with a permanent collection that is out of this world, as well as rotating installations and contemporary work. Great staff as well, and the gift shop is a delight.

As a Washingtons with access to so much art, history, and culture around for free it's way too easy to take it all for granted. Come to Phillips collection to break out of that! Note that if you see a special exhibition there is a fee. It's a perfect size for a museum you can see in its entirety, without getting overwhelmed. And yet leaves you instantly wanting to come back. Cute coffee shop with a lovely, large outdoor area too could be a nice place to catch up or an inspiring environment to get some work done.
