Eckley Miners' Village preserves and interprets for citizens and visitors the everyday life of miners and other mining company employees in a culturally, ethnically, and economically diverse company-owned anthracite community or "patch town."
Our goals are to present exhibits, tours, educational programs, and special events which broaden the understanding and appreciation of the family and working life of the anthracite miners, including working conditions, employment practices, and development of the labor movement within the industry. Major themes to be presented include:
-The relationship of the coal companies and their leaders to their workers;
-The lives of workers in a company town including working conditions;
-The family, social, cultural and economic life of the community, including medical services and health issues;
-The history of the organization of workers, formation of labor unions, and the important role of the anthracite region in the development of the national labor movement;
-The impact of the de-industrialization on anthracite communities in the region
(Our continuous goal is to) work with other groups whose valued guidance and support enhance the mission and goals of the Eckley Miners' Village Associates and the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission.
Eckley Miners' Village Reviews
Loved our visit to see how the miners lived. The houses are in excellent condition. Bit of a walk up the hill but plenty to see. more »
This pace can be very interesting or just ok depending on your guide. We have had both experienced. There is a very good museum that shows the life of miner families day by day. You can walk the village on your own, but I highly recommend taking the guided tour so you can go into the two churches and two homes.
Parking: Plenty of parking. It took us about 20 minutes to get here from 81. There were signs along the road to lead us here. Museum: Very interesting information. We saw a video and then walked around the museum. There was a tour but because of time we did not take it. Clean bathrooms. Village: You walk around the path and see the houses. There is nothing else to do. You go as far as you want to go. Overall, I like it. It was on our way home from the 1000 islands.
