Big Brutus is the nickname of the Bucyrus-Erie model 1850-B electric shovel, which was the second largest of its type in operation in the 1960s and 1970s. Big Brutus is the centerpiece of a mining museum in West Mineral, Kansas where it was used in coal strip mining operations. The shovel was designed to dig from 20 to 69 feet (6.1 to 21.0 m) down to unearth relatively shallow coal seams, which would themselves be mined with smaller equipment.

  • Great place to visit, especially with young children. Whole place is disability accessible with the exception of the control room of Big Brutus.

  • I've been wanting to check this guy out for years, and it was totally worth it! So much stuff to check out, the museum is small but super informative, the land is beautiful and I was lucky enough to basically have the entire place almost all to myself (Tuesday afternoon). It's so much more impressive in person, obviously, and getting to climb up into the beast was super cool (although a bit tight for being 6'6"). Also, didn't know there's a campground as well, something to keep in mind. Also, the girl working there was super nice and helpful, I'll definitely be going back with friends and family!
  • This is one of those perennial tourist attractions that locals easily overlook, but if you haven't taken the kids or gone since you were a kid, you really need to stop by and visit again. Brutus is amazingly huge. And it's fun to climb up and around in it. The indoor museum is cool, too, and there's a nice picnic area and mini playground for young kids. I thought my crew would spend about an hour there, but we ended up leaving 2 hours after arrival, and that's without reading all the mining info. Definitely stop by and visit!
