Turtle Back Zoo, West Orange

4.5
#1 of 10 in Things to do in West Orange
Home to about 850 animals representing 275 species, Turtle Back Zoo welcomes half million people annually to its themed exhibits. See a sea lion tank and prowl along a penguin coastline; tour habitats of large cats, wolves, bears, and alligators; and visit a reptile center. Wildlife aficionados won't want to miss the 2.7 m (9 ft) long lizard that was discovered in 2005 and still has no scientific name. Can foxes fly? You'll find out by seeking out the first flying foxes in any United States' zoo--giant bats that can reach a weight of 1.1 kg (2.4 lb) with a 1.5 m (4.9 ft) wingspan. The zoo is a part of South Mountain Recreation Complex. To visit Turtle Back Zoo and other attractions in West Orange, use our West Orange trip maker tool .

  • I had nice time walking around this zoo. It was small but had just enough exhibits to keep me occupied and entertained. There is a small extra charge for the Butterfly Garden.  more »

  • Probably the nicest cleanest most wholesome Zoo I’ve ever been to inside the US. Most zoos & aquariums are in neighborhoods that I don’t normally go to or are far from me. Got kids & want to do something Sat - then you’re in good company. There is a mini train that kids love too. Go early for the train - it actually runs faster than you think. Animals look good & healthy too. Thank you for being in the area.
  • Went with our grand-daughter today and haven't been in over 20 years. The place looks so much better. The facility is in very good shape. Appreciated the hand washing stations, the train ride, clean bathrooms, 'reasonably' priced food, carousel and of course the animals. The only reason I didn't give 5 stars is because many of the stations were missing the animals. It's still August, so we would have expected all of them to be there. The giraffe area was especially nice and we had a great day.
