Explore a historical psychiatric hospital at Trans-Allegheny Lunatic Asylum, which was open from 1864 to 1994. Now a National Historic Landmark, the imposing main building is one of the largest hand-cut stone masonry buildings in the world. The hospital was designed to accommodate just 250 patients but became crowded with about 2,400 patients, living in poor conditions, during the 1950s. Choose from a variety of guided tours based around subjects such as the American Civil War, asylum treatments and history, and the paranormal. • best thing ever. the staff was really nice an helped me. The water fountains were a perfect temperature, and they had coins in it! Some people gave me weird looks, not sure why, but i really enjoyed it. The food was good, although the pork chops tasted weird. every now and then one of my many friends would go missing, and every time one did we would have a feast with lots of different meats. I'm not sure why, But i enjoyed the exotic meats. There was one i couldn't recall the name of was really interesting. I had never tasted anything like it.
  • It was AWESOME!!!! The building is beautiful, they have done an amazing job up keeping the grounds. The tour guide, Seth, was extremely knowledgeable and answered every question that was asked. The history and surroundings was incredible. We only did one of the many tours, I can't wait to go back and do all the others!
