Whiskeytown National Recreation Area, Whiskeytown

#252 of 608 in Nature in California
National Park · Nature / Park
Whiskeytown Lake’s beautiful sapphire-blue waters, surrounded by mountain peaks, are perhaps the most prominent feature of the park. However, water-based recreation is only a small part of what the park has to offer. The 39,000 acres surrounding the lake hold four waterfalls, pristine mountain creeks, 70 miles of trails, and opportunities to explore the history of the California Gold Rush.

  • This is a beautiful area damaged last year by the Carr Fire. There’s a gift shop and restrooms at the visitor’s center and park rangers are available to answer questions.  more »
  • Our recent visit took us through this area on 299 to Redding. The devastation of the fires to the area. 299 is now open and passable, but the Park was closed.  more »
  • The surrounding brush can be rough and messy depending where you go, but find a path and enjoy the beautiful water. There are small beaches, and almost every smaller sand patch feels secluded, even if you hear people you probably won't see them unless they're out in the water. Parking is usually a pain, however.
  • Once again thank you all so much for ur help today in helping find my daughter and her 2 friends (ages 12-15) . Within seconds there where 3 people looking . Thank you They where found safe ❤️
