The Upper Big Branch Miners Memorial opened on Friday, July 27th, 2012.

It consists of three distinct areas. The focal point being a 48' long granite monument to the 29 UBB Miners killed during the explosion. The second aspect of the memorial is a First Responders Tribute- a bronze sculpture created by West Virginia artist Ross Straight. The last portion of the memorial is an interpretive signage area that explains how and why the explosion occurred, a timeline of events and details four historical coal disasters in West Virginia.
