#4 of 11 in Historic Sites in Williamsburg
Must see · Historic Site · Tourist Spot
See where royal governors and the state's first two elected governors, including Thomas Jefferson, once lived. Governor's Palace gives insight into how Virginia’s powerful men lived in colonial times. Destroyed by a fire in 1781, the current palace has been reconstructed based on the original foundation and archaeological evidence that survived the fire. Walk in the footsteps of some of Virginia’s most influential men as you explore the many lavish rooms decorated with weaponry from the period. In the gardens behind the palace, guides in period dress perform re-enactments of historical events that took place here. The guided tour is a must. • With the current tour limits, it can take awhile to get in, but it’s worth the wait. Informative docents make it great. The front entry is meant to cause that shock and awe factor. Get there early...  more »
  • What a marvelous thing they have done with this historic site. All of the staff here are well informed in their field of service. Moreso, in fact, than just about any company or establishment I have ever visited. The archeology and research invested in recreating this building in its original specs on its original foundation... breathtaking... Beautiful grounds! Amazing artistry! Captivating scenery! All 5 star worthy!
  • Very beautiful restoration. The foundation has clearly worked very hard to make this mansion look like its former existence. The materials appeared to be appropriate for the era too. It is great to see this amount of work and money spent on history.
