You can walk right up to the rim of Meteor Crater & Barringer Space Museum, thought to be one of the best-preserved meteorite craters on the planet. The crater is privately owned by the Barringer family, the descendants of the scientist who was first to suggest that the crater was due to a meteor. The visitor center displays pieces of the meteorite recovered from the floor of the crater and tells the history surrounding the site. Learn about Daniel Barringer and the journey that led to the crater's discovery, then trek the paved walkway to its viewing point. Bring sunscreen; there is no natural shade along the walkway. Meteor Crater & Barringer Space Museum reviews
This was a very neat place. I learned a lot. None of us were expecting what awaited. Amazing place. We all were really glad we went through it, even the teenager in the mix. more »
I went here as a child and enjoyed it, but for $20 a person I did not want to go back. All I remember was looking at the hole. However, I was outvoted and we stopped. It was so much better than my... more »
What a cool place to stop and hang out for a couple hours! Lots of info on meteors and cool props you can check out. They have a 1400lb piece of meteor on display that you can touch. We enjoyed a guided tour by Michael who was really cool and very informative. There is a virtual theater ride that kids will love and an awesome gift shop. There's also a small restaurant and super clean restrooms. Only reason that I won't leave a 5 star review is the cost of entry. Its hard to drop $22 per adult just to get inside.
It's been upgraded so this is a plus. I've been here three times and on this visit it has been up graded A LOT. Pricing is still high from when i was younger; $22 per adult so check online for prepaid or group before you go. Now you at least get something for your money. A mini movie which was pretty cool. A very interesting learning walk through. The viewing of the creator is a lot better too. Years ago you couldn't go as low as you can now. Huge huge problem for me was the air conditioning in the theater and the museum. It was set at 78 degrees when the weather outside was 112*. It made me want to leave and NEVER come back. Who does that? The only thing that is saving this place is the gift shop because the a/c was on in there and everyone was gathered in there to cool off. Makes no sense to sweat everyone out of the restaurant portion if your trying to make money off expensive food. It's like inviting someone to your home, you just don't leave the a/c at 78 in Arizona. If your hurtung for money running people off isn't going to help you.
