  • After you visit the historic mine, keep walking for about 2 miles and you will reach a 1/2 mile descent down to Root Glacier. From there you can venture out onto the glacier. The 2 mile part of the...  more »

  • Fairly easy 1 hour hike to glacier. Glacier massive so spend as long or as little as you like. Crampons a must. You may be able to rent from a local outfitter but call in advance to be sure. If in doubt bring your own. You are standing on ice, so even in summer you should pack a fleece and a windshell. Make sure to bring drinking water if you will be out several hours.
