Fountain Paint Pot, Yellowstone National Park

#1 of 22 in Trails in Yellowstone National Park
Hot Spring · Hidden Gem · Hiking Trail
Fountain Paint Pot catches the eye with its red, yellow, brown, and deep blue shades of bubbling mud. This is an ideal spot to observe various side effects of volcanic activity, from boiling mud pots and gushing geysers to smoking openings in the earth's crust called fumaroles. Stay on the wooden boardwalk at all times, and try to come in the winter, when the smoking pot of mud makes a startling contrasting to the surrounding snow. • Located in the Lower Geyser Basin, these geothermal features are amazing to see. A posting gives information about their formation. It's a fascinating site to observe and enjoy.  more »
  • The kids really enjoyed this part of the park. There was so many different things to see. I’d highly recommend you make this a stop as you explore the park.  more »
  • Loved the hot pots. It’s a nice easy walk around a nicely built walkway above the hot pot floor. Very cool to see the different colors of the pools and the contrast in temperatures between all the pools. The backdrop of these pools is the scenic mountains of Yellowstone park. Highly recommend
  • Bubble bubble, beautiful colors. Not much walking involved here but you still get a great variety of things to see. The trail is highly accessible for those with mobility issues though there are stairs at one point that should be avoidable. My only issue was that the sulfur smell is STRONG at some of the thermal locations, don’t say you weren’t warned.
