Create an itinerary including Lehardy's Rapids
Have a picnic alongside turbulent white water at Lehardy's Rapids. The rapids mark the boundary between Yellowstone Lake and Yellowstone River. This step-like cascade can be reached via a short trail or boardwalk depending on whether you're approaching from the lower or the higher pullout. Time your visit in late spring/early summer when the river is at its highest and cutthroat trout can be seen resting in the pools before the spawning starts in late June. • My favorite thing about this site, was the bison that we encountered before we actually reached the rapids. There was a herd that was crossing over in front of us and we got a first hand, up close...

  • Yellowstone is such an amazing place, with so many things to see. The LeHardy Rapids is definitely worth going to, and should be on your list of places to stop in Yellowstone. The parking wasn't too bad, the amenities were clean and abundant. Plenty of park rangers around to ask questions. It's a pretty simple walk around the area as well.
  • Neat little boardwalk, very happy to get to stick my feet in the river. TONS of mayfly’s so if you don’t like bugs maybe not a great stop for you. Otherwise totally recommend
