Lehardy's Rapids, Yellowstone National Park

#63 of 66 in Nature in Yellowstone National Park
Water Body · Hidden Gem · Nature / Park
Have a picnic alongside turbulent white water at Lehardy's Rapids. The rapids mark the boundary between Yellowstone Lake and Yellowstone River. This step-like cascade can be reached via a short trail or boardwalk depending on whether you're approaching from the lower or the higher pullout. Time your visit in late spring/early summer when the river is at its highest and cutthroat trout can be seen resting in the pools before the spawning starts in late June. • One of my favorite places in Yellowstone. Not very well known so not as crowded. Rushing water sound is very nice. Bring a rain jacket/umbrella!
  • This is really interesting place. You see lots of splash maybe due to lots of rock steps here. So when fish passes this region they might need to jump over it. It’s pity that I didn’t see any fish at that day, but I see some birds swim upstream lol. The trail is full of snows hope it’s been cleared
