Get a taste of life on the frontier and camp under the stars at Calico Ghost Town. The town was once a bustling silver mining community with more than 1,000 residents, 500 mines, a school, and a post office. When silver prices dropped near the end of the 19th century, the miners started leaving, and soon the town was completely abandoned. Today, you can tour the buildings--fully restored to match their 1880s' heyday--go on a horseback ride, hear the stories of the town's past, or grab a spot at a nearby camping site. You'll be in the desert heat, so be sure to bring sunscreen and plenty of water. For travelers who use our world travel planner, Yermo holidays become easier to arrange, with trips to the Calico Ghost Town and other attractions mapped out and timetabled.

  • A great place to visit on a nice day! There is a lot of walking involved, a majority of it uphill, so wear comfortable shoes. This is not the place to take someone with balance or mobility issues...

  • Get out of the city and go see a ghost town! This is a cute location and for the SoCal traveler, it's not too far of a drive, or even a great stop on the way to Vegas. We camped out and then went to the town the next day, which was amazing. We will be back to try the cabins and some more of the tours you have to book ahead for.
  • Nice Ghost town. Loads of shops you can even get real dinosaur teeth. The saloon serves good burgers and is quite stylish
