Get a taste of life on the frontier and camp under the stars at Calico Ghost Town. The town was once a bustling silver mining community with more than 1,000 residents, 500 mines, a school, and a post office. When silver prices dropped near the end of the 19th century, the miners started leaving, and soon the town was completely abandoned. Today, you can tour the buildings--fully restored to match their 1880s' heyday--go on a horseback ride, hear the stories of the town's past, or grab a spot at a nearby camping site. You'll be in the desert heat, so be sure to bring sunscreen and plenty of water. For travelers who use our world travel planner, Yermo holidays become easier to arrange, with trips to the Calico Ghost Town and other attractions mapped out and timetabled.

  • Real cool place and a step back in time. It’s such an amazing experience to see what it was like back over 150 years ago in such a remote place. Special thanks to the lady that drove the train, you...

  • It was a first visit, so we weren't sure what to expect. And it's safe to say, we will be back! They have camp sites with hook-ups but for our stay we were at a site without. The other campers were friendly and respectful and it wasn't loud late or early. Going in January meant the hiking was fun because we weren't stressed about snake run ins. There are many places to hike and explore. The old town part has some fun things like a mine shaft short tour ( $3 or$4 per person,) a train tour, panning for gold, a sweet shop, a general store, a restaurant, a saloon and a cafe plus a rock and fossil shop. Lots to walk around and look at. There is also a coffee shop inside the sweet shop that will make you a Starbucks style coffee. There isn't shade so this might be brutal to hike and explore in hot months.
  • Wow! What an awesome place. So full of history and cool things to walk around and see. Definitely bring comfy shoes and a jacket there’s lots to see, the mine was awesome! And the food was solid! Love the history and will come back again.
